Review: Final Girls

I loved this book and read the whole thing in a day. It was a just a genuinely great horror/thriller.

It told the story of Quincy Carpenter who became the only survivor of a massacre that killed her college friends while they were vacationing in a cabin in the woods together. The story tells the tale of three different massacres and their only female survivors and how their lives become entwined when the media labels them all the ‘Final Girls’(like in a horror movie they were the only ones that made it out alive)

The main character Quincy was a flawed and messed up character but the author did a great job of making her likeable despite who the killings had affected her. The story reminded me of Scream (back when horror films were actually good and not just gore fests). There were so many twists and turns in this story and it was a riveting read from beginning to end. I was completely shocked by the big reveal at the end. I also really liked the end of this book I just felt it was so beautifully done, showing the story goes full circle.

Review: The Silent Wife

Well, first of all, it seems like too many books are being advertised as the new Gone Girl recently and it needs to stop! This book isn’t that in fact I would say the only thing this book has in common with it is super unlikable characters. I did like this book though but it’s not one I will remember forever.

This book is basically about a couple who are super awful. Jodi is delusional and thinks she is the perfect, smartest and greatest wife ever to walk the earth and Todd is as dumb as he is arrogant and thinks he’s god’s gift to women. He pushes his perfect Stepford wife too far. Honestly, by the end of the book, you are kind of hoping one of them kills the other off and you aren’t bothered if the other goes away for life for it.

So some spoilers here but this was really good too. A Wolverine appearance obviously makes everything better and there were some cute touching bonding superhero moments there. I also love the huge teleporting dog, it’s basically my ideal pet and I want one. Cute story. In general fun little read.

All of the Lumberjane books are well worth a read. I especially love this one as it showed how all the girls became friends and I mean it had mermaids what is not to love! They teach about the importance of friendship, helping others, giving second chances and being a better person all wrapped up in stories that are quirky, fun and exciting to read.

I enjoyed this book I read the graphic novel first just because I got a free copy but it made me want to go read the book now. I loved the world that it began to set up with trolls and the fairy police department. Artemis seems like a complex antihero type character who used his evil genius really just to help out his mother. The relationship between Butler and Artemis seems like it will be an interesting one too in later stories. For a first book though I thought it was a fun and fast-paced read with interesting and likeable characters.

This is a hard book to review honestly it made for an interesting read and it’s a topic that I find interesting. The amount of name dropping though was just too much. Yep, most celebs and presidents are probably narcissists, I didn’t need to read this book to figure that out. I would have liked more relatable stories about narcissistic things people we may know actually do. Or signs for ourselves that we may be a little too narcissistic. I mean there were stories like that in this book and those I found fascinating but I found them just too weighed down with the celeb talk.

So I will admit I’ve not read a lot of comics before but I’m trying to change that. I did enjoy this one though.
Kamala is likeable, down to earth and a funny character. The book looks at Kamala trying to find a balance in life between being the person her family want her to be and the person that with the help of her friends and her new superpowers she is slowly becoming. It’s a book about friendship and self-love and self-growth as much as it is about superpowers. It finds a nice balance between sharing what Kamala’s life is like with her strict Muslim family without feeling like the religion is being shoved down the reader’s throat. The book has a good balance of serious moments and light-hearted humour. It could have done with more evil fighting for sure but I think for a first volume it was a great start.

I have never read any of the Archie comics before but I enjoyed the reboot. I love the show Riverdale and I love the fact that it is getting the comics new readers. The artwork was beautiful. Cute start to the story and I look forward to reading more of it. Very short though.

It was just ok basically. Considering who the author is I was expecting to get caught up in a world but that didn't really happen. It was overly detailed, too long with way too much description of London. Strike and Robin could be interesting characters but it didn't seem like they were really developed yet and the story just wasn't that exciting. I still want to read the other two but I wasn't overly impressed sadly.

Review: The Council of Mirrors

I can't rate this series high enough. I was gutted this is the last book. It was more than just a children's book. The characters were so wonderfully developed and the interesting twist on so many fairytale characters was such a delight to read. Puck and Sabrina and Daphne totally stole my heart from the beginning. Every book was fun to read and I raced through this series quicker than I would have liked. Overall I think this last book did the series justice (Wasn't much of a fan of the future parts at the end though)Would recommend this book to everyone and I will be reading them all to any future babies I have.

The premise of this book is great, it’s such an interesting concept but man the delivery made it hard to stay awake. It dragged on in way too much detail. Man, I tried to be interested in this book I really did. The characters were dull and annoying. I mean gotta give Orwell credit for basically being the father of the dystopian worlds but honestly not a fan. Animal Farm was pretty similar but I liked that way more.

Review: The Lightning Thief

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

I loved this book. I enjoyed the plot but it was the masterful way that the mythology was incorporated into the story and modernized that was the most truly impressive part of these books. The plot is a quick, smart adventure story with a few great plot twists. The story was Harry Potter-esque but really Percy Jackson is actually a much more likeable hero than Harry. I loved his friendship with Grover who is just brilliant and his growing friendship with Annabeth who is such a little badass. Can’t wait to read the other books.

I will be honest and say I didn't care for this book. I didn't find the author particularly likeable and mostly just narcissistic and self-absorbed at best. I think she treated her partner terribly and there is no excuse for that. The book was brave and honest though I will give her credit for that and she did go through something horrible that no one would ever want to experience.
